Officer Barta was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance. After shooting Officer Barta, the suspect shot his ex-girlfriend and then committed suicide.

Officer Barta had served with the agency for 18 years. He was survived by his wife and two children.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 51rst anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect and your memory will always be honored and revered.
