Sergeant Alane Stoffregen drowned while participating in a Marine Unit deep-water training dive one mile off shore in Lake Michigan.
She and another police diver were in approximately 30 feet of water when she started signs of distress. She was transported to shore and then to a local hospital where she passed away.
Sergeant Stoffregen had served Chicago Police Department for 22 years and was a certified master diver.
