Sergeant Gary Scott was killed in an automobile crash while participating in a vehicle pursuit on US 301 near Sylvania.

Sergeant Scott attempted to pull over a vehicle at 11:30 p.m., but the driver did not stop. The fleeing vehicle sideswiped another car while speeding through a stop sign. The suspect vehicle fled the scene but wrecked several miles away and fled on foot. Two suspects were taken into custody the next day. The driver was convicted of homicide by vehicle in the first degree, reckless driving, driving under the influence, driving without insurance, and two counts of hit and run.
