Trooper Bond and another trooper were assisting the motorist on I-90 near Erie, Pennsylvania when a tractor trailer ran into the cruiser. The second trooper was not seriously injured. Trooper Bond was in the passenger seat of the cruiser, and the second trooper was in the driver's seat. In August 1999, Trooper Bond won the agency's Medal of Honor for rescuing two people from a burning house.
In June 2001, Exit 10 on I-90, was renamed to the "Trooper Matthew R. Bond Memorial Interchange" in his honor.
He had been employed with the Pennsylvania State Police for five years, and is survived by his wife and parents. |
