Officer Tenny Gatewood was shot and killed while struggling with two suspects he had stopped. Officer Gatewood was responding to a burglary call of a store on the White Mountain Apache Tribe reservation when he stopped a vehicle he believed the suspects occupied. As Officer Gatewood was handcuffing one of the suspects, a scuffle ensued and his handgun was wrestled away from him. One of the suspects then shot him in the head with it. The suspects, a father and son, then fled into the woods, where the were arrested approximately eight hours later.
Officer Gatewood had served with the White Mountain Apache Tribal Police for 9 years. He is survived by his wife, four children and a grandchild.
