Shannon Cuddington Smith

Correctional Officer Shannon Smith was struck and killed by a car while supervising a work crew on U.S. 70.

The driver of the vehicle lost control while talking on a cellular phone, over-corrected back onto the roadway, and struck Officer Smith. The suspect was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and reckless driving and fined $2000.

Officer Smith had served with the North Carolina Division of Prisons for four years. She is survived by her husband, daughter, parents, and sister.

In honor of Officer Smith, the North Carolina Department of Transportation named a bridge on US 70 over the Neuse River, in Johnston County, the Shannon Smith Bridge.

I don't know why today is any different from all the others, but I find it a little harder this morning to deal with the fact that I have to remember you for longer than I knew you. You were the big sister that every little girl needs to have. I have so many vivid memories of our antics and knowing that everyday whether you're here on Earth or not, you are still my super hero. You were, and still are, loved by so many people that knew you. All I can hope for is to be half the woman today that you've been to me my entire life. I love you and I miss you Shannon.

Thank you to everyone who has left a reflection on here. It's comforting to know that people haven't forgotten the life lost too soon.
