Correctional Officer Shannon Smith was struck and killed by a car while supervising a work crew on U.S. 70. The driver of the vehicle lost control while talking on a cellular phone, over-corrected back onto the roadway, and struck Officer Smith. The suspect was charged with a misdemeanor death by vehicle and reckless driving, and fined $2000.

Officer Smith had served with the North Carolina Division of Prisons for four years. She is survived by her husband, daughter, parents, and sister.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation named a bridge on US 70, in Johnston County, the Shannon Smith Bridge in honor of Officer Smith.

Its been so long since you have been gone, and after all these years i still miss you. But this year i have you with me in a different way as well you have 3 grand kids now Henry age 7 and Nathan age 6, and Shannon age 1. I love you more than life and i always will and i know you have been playing with the kids because they saw a picture and knew you were grandma. I love you and have a blast with papa i know he is so very happy now. Im going for now but you will always be missed in every way, till we meet again...
