Sergeant Barrett was killed after being assaulted by a mentally deranged person who had fled from city hospital's emergency room. As Sergeant Barrett talked to the subject the man suddenly struck him in the head, causing him to fall backwards and strike his head on the curb.

Sergeant Barrett had served with the agency for 23 years. He was survived by his wife and four children.

The Badge of Honor Association (Rochester, NY) will be honoring Sgt. Perry Barrett and others on March 27, 2014 in Dunkirk, NY. BOHA has begun a campaign in Western New York to place road signs at or near the location of each officer's death. Road signs for officers killed in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Allegany Counties will be dedicated at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial Park on Lake Shore Drive West (RT5).
