Officer Crumley was killed when his patrol car struck a utility pole as he was responding to assist another officer. The second officer had been left with three juvenile car thief suspects when other units on the scene left to assist in another car chase.

When the other units left several adults appeared and began to argue with the officer, who then requested assistance. Officer Crumley was responding from approximately a quarter mile away. He was travelling at a high rate of speed and, as he crested a hill, another vehicle pulled out 400 yards in front of him. He swerved to avoid the vehicle and struck the utility pole, cracking it in half. The driver of the second vehicle, who was driving drunk, was arrested later in the night. Officer Crumley was wearing his seat-belt and his airbag deployed but impact was so great that he still suffered fatal injuries.

Officer Crumley had served with the agency since August 1997. He is survived by his wife and one child.

To my loving brother-Jarvis. Thank you for always being such a good friend and listener. I love you and miss you. I wish you were here but I'm glad you finally did what you wanted to do even-though I fought you on it. You were happy being a police officer and you were great at it too. I remember the first day you came to the house with a real gun on your waist, I was in shock because I thought they would start you out with a badge and some handcuffs. My-my-my was I surprised! You looked at me and said, Noooo, this is the real thing. Even-though I miss you like crazy, I'm so proud you died doing what you wanted to do. My hat is off to you. I know you are so proud of Jazmin, she is our queen and I love her with my whole heart. I could hug and kiss her all day but she is growing up now. I still sneak a few hugs and kisses in but not as much as I would like:-) I love you brother and I don't believe it will be long before we see each other in peace. I love you! Your Sister-Deandra
