Captain Spencer was killed in an automobile accident on I-80 near Reno, Nevada. He had been in law enforcement for over 30 years and was survived by his wife, two sons, three brothers and two sisters.
On March 25, 2001, one of Captain Spencer's son, Officer Creighton Spencer, was killed in the line of duty on I-80 near Elko, Nevada, while responding to a call. Officer Spencer was also a member of the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 11th anniversary year of your death and the eighth anniversary of your son's line of duty death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
