Deputy Villiard was killed as he was responding to a call of a non-breathing person. He was attempting to avoid a head-on collision when he lost control of his cruiser which then rolled several times, ejecting him. He was flown to a hospital a in Duluth, Minnesota, where he died a short time later.

Deputy Villiard had served with the agency for 13 years. He is survived by his wife, three children, mother, and siblings.

18 years ago to this day. I don't speak of that day often, I keep it within me. It has made me stronger as a person, as a cop, and as a father. There are fewer deputies on the job here now that were benefited with having known you. Those newer, younger deputies are at a loss that they will not understand. We will tell them, and we will not allow them to forget.....
