Patrolman Thomas Smith was killed after being struck by a motorist while assisting at the scene of a previous accident.

He was standing next to a tow truck with the earlier accident victim when a van struck a patch of ice and slid into them. Patrolman Smith and the earlier victim died on the scene. The driver of the van was taken into custody for suspicion of involuntary manslaughter.

Patrolman Smith is the eighth St. Louis County officer to die in the line of duty. He had been employed with the department for three years.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 14th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
