Sergeant Lewis was struck by a vehicle at 0055 hours while investigating an accident with injuries on northbound I-57 at Exit 315. While he was at the scene a 21-year-old driver, who was distracted by all of the emergency equipment, struck Sergeant Lewis as he stood on the side of the road.

Sergeant Lewis was transported to St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee where he was pronounced dead at 0110 hours. He had turned 50 the day before the accident.
