Officer David C. Evans responded to a call of "police officers requiring assistance". As Officer Evans proceeded to the scene, three pedestrians ran onto the overpass in front of their cruiser. The cruiser swerved to avoid hitting the pedestrians and crashed through the barrier of the overpass and dropped 25 feet, landing on the Dan Ryan Expressway below.
Officer Evans sustained serious injuries which resulted in his death. He is survived by his three children.
