Lieutenant Sweeney was killed after being shot with a shotgun while attempting to serve a petition. Lieutenant Sweeney was shot through a door by the mentally ill suspect at about noon and died at 1604 hours while in surgery. The shot struck him in his lower back as he was walking away from the door after attempting to talk to the suspect. He was not wearing a vest.
The suspect was committed to a maximum security hospital and not held criminally responsible for Lieutenant Sweeney's murder.
Lieutenant Sweeney was 28 year veteran of the Baltimore Police Department and routinely worked in the field with officers under his command. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
