Deputy Sheriff James Harper was killed and another deputy was wounded after being shot while responding to a call of gunshots at a residence. Deputy Harper arrived first and as he was talking with the suspect, a fight ensued. Deputy Harper was shot in the head at close range. The second deputy arrived moments later and saw the suspect standing over Deputy Harper's body. As the second deputy asked what was happening, the suspect opened fire and shot him in the shoulder and stomach.

The suspect was later found dead after being surrounded by state police in an abandoned house. Deputy Harper was wearing his vest but the second was not.

Deputy Harper is survived by his wife and four children.
