Gilbert J. Mast

Sergeant Gilbert Mast was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while he and another officer were conducting a traffic stop on McAlister Drive.

Another vehicle sped into the area and Sergeant Mast signaled the driver to stop. The vehicle instead sped up, hit a car, and then struck Sergeant Mast. He was dragged approximately 80 feet and killed almost instantly.

The 20-year-old student who struck him was convicted of negligent homicide and felony hit-and-run. He was sentenced to 6 months in jail, 2 1/2 years house arrest, 40 hours a week for one year teaching unfortunates how to read, and fined $15,000.

Sergeant Mast had served with the Tulane University Police Department for six years and had previously served with the Kenner Police Department.

My best friend worked with Gilbert. I was and still am a state trooper for LSP. From what I know he was a good man, loving husband and father. God rest his soul and bless his family.
