Officer Young was shot and killed when he and his partner observed a suspicious vehicle on Washington Avenue North and went to investigate. As they approached a suspect immediately opened fire, striking Officer Young in the chest. Officer Young's partner returned fire as three more men jumped into the car and fled. The vehicle was found abandoned in St. Paul. No suspects were ever apprehended.
Officer Young had been with the agency for a total of 16 years on two different occasions. He was survived by his wife and eight children.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the ninety-first anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
