Officer Kenneth Wrede was shot and killed after responding to a disturbance call.

Citizens had called the police after seeing a male under the influence of PCP, acting bizarre in the street.

When Officer Wrede arrived, he struggled with the suspect momentarily before running back to his patrol car. The male also ran to the officer's patrol car. Because the man was high on PCP, he was able to rip the shotgun from the mounting bracket out of the vehicle's dashboard and shoot Officer Wrede with it.

The killer was sentenced to death but the sentence was overturned by a federal appeals court in 2000. In July 2002, the killer was tried a second time and was again sentenced to death.

In 2007 a four-mile section of I-10 was dedicated as the West Covina Police Officer Kenneth Scott Wrede Memorial Highway in memory of Officer Wrede.

Officer Wrede had served with the agency for 2 years. He was survived by his wife.

We buried another hero just a month ago, Officer Keith Boyer, Whittier PD. I am now a Police Chaplain for Whittier. As we prepared for Keith's funeral, I was taken back in time to the day Kenny died. We were on the same team. He died just blocks from the house where I lived. I think about Kenny just about everyday. I relive the agony of the days following his death, the funeral, the seemingly never-ending trial. In the last month I have re-lived all this over & over.

Eternal rest, grant unto Kenny, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him, Amen. May he rest in peace, Amen. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithfully departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace, Amen.
