Officer Robert W. Wood was shot and killed after he and his partner stopped a vehicle for driving with no headlights. As Officer Wood approached the vehicle he was shot five times.

A suspect was arrested and sentenced to death for Officer Wood's murder. However, the sentence was overturned 12 years later and the suspect was released. Another suspect, who had testified against the first as a state's witness, was convicted of an unrelated murder, and sentenced to death. Although he had never admitted to Officer Wood's murder, he had provided information about the case to detectives and remained a prime suspect. He was executed for the unrelated murder on June 30, 2004.

Officer Wood had served with the Dallas Police Department for 2 years. He is survived by his wife.

After viewing the Thin Blue Line, I felt compelled to leave another reflection for you. When these films are made, they unfortunately minimize anything personal about the fallen officer. Thus, I am writing to say that I remember you with respect for your service and sacrifice, and hold your family in my heart's embrace.

I think it is interesting to note that Randall Adams sued the filmmaker Errol Morris after his release from prison, upset that he had given the right to his story to Morris and he wanted it back. Not much gratitude for the person everyone credits with being the driving force behind the decision not to retry Adams. But then it was also reported that Adams never contacted his appellate attorney who fought for him after Adams returned to Ohio.
