Inspector Wood was killed during a boat pursuit on the Detroit River near Wyandotte, Michigan. He and several other inspectors had seized two boats carrying contraband. Inspector Wood and a second inspect each gave pursuit to two other boats in the area that were carrying illegal aliens. Inspector Wood's boat, which had been rammed by the other boat, was found on the shore a short time later. Inspector Wood either drowned or was murdered and thrown into the river by the suspects. His body was never found.
Inspector Wood had been with the agency for one years.
