Deputy Wood and Sheriff Horace Taylor were shot and killed as they attempted to arrest a miner for making a disturbance in Zenith, Tennessee. A posse was formed after the two were killed. The miner's foreman attempted to talk the man into the surrendering, but the suspect opened fire on him as well. Despite being mortally wounded, the foreman was able to return fire and also killed the suspect.
