Sergeant Wood was shot and killed by a juvenile suspect he had just arrested attempting to steal an automobile. Sergeant Wood apprehended four juveniles in the automobile. He hopped on the running board and instructed the driver to drive them all to the police station. As they pulled up to the station, one of the suspects shot Sergeant Wood with a .44 caliber revolver. The suspect was arrested and sentenced to death.

Sergeant Wood had been with the agency for 12 years.
