Park Policeman Arthur Wittbrodt was killed when he was thrown from the running board of a commandeered vehicle at the intersection of 53rd Street and Michigan Avenue.

Officer Wittbrodt was responding to the scene of another accident when the driver of the commandeered vehicle braked suddenly to avoid striking another car.

Officer Wittbrodt was survived by his wife and two children.

The Chicago Park District Police in the City of Chicago was disbanded in 1957. Remaining officers were transferred to the Chicago Police Department through an intergovernmental agreement. Fallen officers are currently honored on the memorial wall of the Chicago Police Department as Chicago Police Officers.
