Police Officer Raymond Willert was shot and killed while responding to a robbery in progress.

As Officer Willert walked past the bank window the suspects, who were still inside, opened fire and struck Officer Willert in the head. Other officers apprehended the men.

The shooter was apprehended and sentenced to life in prison.

Officer Willert had served with the Turlock Police Department for five years. He was survived by his wife and 3-year-old daughter.

I believe my father worked with and/or trained Ray. I remember (vividly) driving past the Western Union in Turlock and seeing Ray. We had been to his home and he and family had been to ours. I was only 11 years old when I watched Ray get shot. That has stayed with me my entire life. So sorry for the loss of this good man and officer. Thank you for your service. Glad to have known you if only for a short time.
