Assistant Chief Wilkes was shot and killed while sitting in his police car in the driveway of a home. The suspect claimed he thought that Chief Wilkes was the ex-husband of his girlfriend.

The suspect was convicted of second degree manslaughter and sentenced to one year in the county jail March 28, 1952.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 60th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect, not even 60 years.
