Wetterling California Highway Patrol California End of Watch: Friday, March 9, 1973 Biographical Info Age: 30 Tour of Duty: 6 years Badge Number: 5966 Incident Details Cause of Death: Gunfire Date of Incident: Friday, March 9, 1973 Weapon Used: Handgun; .38 caliber Suspect Info: Apprehended Officer Wetterling was shot and killed during a traffic stop of a suspected drunk driver in San Bernardino County. After shooting Officer Wetterling with a .38 caliber revolver, the man stole the officer's service weapon and shot him several more times. The suspect then stole Officer Wetterling's patrol car and fled the scene. During the search for the man the suspect also shot and killed Deputy Al Stewart of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department and wounded a civilian ride along.
A passerby, who had a concealed handgun permit, witnessed the shootout between the suspect and Deputy Stewart shot and wounded the suspect. The man was then taken into custody and sentenced to 30 years in prison.
