Officer Wells was shot and killed with his own service weapon while making a traffic stop. Officer Wells normally was a motor officer but was driving a patrol car. During the traffic stop he was leaning into the patrol car when the suspect grabbed his service weapon and shot him.
A passing cab driver who witnessed the murder rammed the suspect's car and held the man until other officers arrived. The suspect was paroled after serving only 13 years.
Officer Wells had served with the Detroit Police Department for 13 years and was survived by his wife and two daughters.
