James Albert Welch

Chief of Police James Welch was fatally injured when a booby trapped still exploded in a barn near Lewisberry while he and several federal prohibition agents were destroying it

His wounds were initially not thought to be that serious. Because Chief Welch had not fully recovered from being shot while making an arrest one year earlier complications with his condition resulted. He died in the Harrisburg Hospital one week later after the blast.

Chief Welch was survived by his wife and two children.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 84th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
