Deputy Sheriff Lathe Warren was shot and killed when he responded to a disturbance call at the Log Mountain Cafe, one mile south of Pineville.
A 19-year-old man was cursing employees and brandishing a pistol after being refused whiskey. As Deputy Warren arrived on the scene the suspect shot him in the knee and then through his neck. Deputy Warren returned fire killing the suspect.
The suspect was the son of the man who was acquitted of murdering Chief Ambrose Metcalfe, the only police chief of the Harlan County Police Department on April 17, 1949. The Harlan County Police Department closed after his murder because no one would take his place.
Deputy Warren was survived by eight children.
