Officer Done Bacon was killed when his patrol car was rear-ended by a drunk driver at the intersection of Compton Boulevard (modern day Gardena Boulevard) and Western Avenue.

Officer Bacon was riding in the rear seat of the patrol car at the time it was struck. The drunk driver who caused the accident was convicted of charges as a result of the incident.

On the night Don Bacon was killed, Labor day 1956, ofcr Dan Thomson and I were working at the old Hitching Post when we heard about the accident, we went to Gardena Police Station and took the officers involved place for the rest of the evening , they were Ofcr. Bob Mohn, Dave Stukey who were injured and Reserve Officer Don Bacon who was killed
