Officer Larry Walker was accidentally shot and killed by another officer who was struggling with a suspect attempting to stab him. The two officers had responded to a domestic violence call involving a man who had just been released from a state hospital. When the officers arrived the man advanced on them with a knife and threatened to kill them.

The suspect began to run towards Officer Walker's partner, who fired four shots at the man. As the partner retreated backwards he tripped and the suspect began to attack him on the ground. The officer fired three more rounds, one of which struck Officer Walker in the abdomen, killing him.

Officer Walker had served with the agency for 19 years. He was survived by his wife and four daughters.

30 years has gone by in the blink of an eye. I often think of Larry and the positive impacts he made on his community and those around him. Larry was my uncle. I have fond memories of family picnics, wood cutting and seeing him on Friday nights at the Tacoma roller rink. I was 18 when Larry died, and I can only say I wish there would have been more time to know and learn from him.

All of Larry's brothers and parents have since passed on, only leaving a few of us left in the family that can reflect on the good times and take comfort that Larry's legacies live on.

I want to thank everyone for their thoughts, and the Tacoma Police Department for allowing us an avenue for sharing our thoughts and memories of Larry and all the fallen officers.
