Officer Waers was shot and killed when he interrupted a burglary of coal cars in the rail yards in Herington, Kansas. Officer Waers had been assigned to the rail yards to investigate the murders of nine people over the previous five years. During the investigation he interrupted the burglary and was shot. Two suspects were eventually apprehended.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 90th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. You will always be honored and revered.
