Deputy Vrelland and Deputy Sheriff Frank Curtice were shot and killed as they attempted to arrest a man for assaulting his employer. The suspect was shot and killed the next day by members of a posse.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 92nd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer. What a sad day that must have been for your families and community to lose two law enforcement officers in one incident.
