Officer Vargas-Alvira and Officer Jose Torres-Gomez were shot and killed while transporting a drunk driver in the back seat. The suspect apparently had a gun concealed on his person that the officers did not find.

Just to tell you that you were my inspiration to become a police officer. And after 18 years on the force still remember you as the older kid that use to play with us. The day you join the force was a proud day for your family and for me. The day a first saw you with your uniform on i knew them i wanted to be a police officer.
I always remembered you and i pass down that memories to my daughters. You always be my inspiration and my friend.
