Officer Aurandt and a Detective were off duty and rabbit hunting in a rural area of Tulsa on Federal Road. About 2100 hours the officers had returned to their car when then were approached by four armed men who had gotten out of a Buick touring car with the intent of robbing the officers. The Detective attempted to fire his shotgun at them but it misfired. The Four men started shooting at he officers while they were setting in their car. Officer Aurandt, despite serious wounds in one lung, leg and liver, drove a mile to a farmhouse where he collapsed.
Officer Aurandt died from his wounds two days later. The Detective was paralyzed for life from leg wounds just above the knees.
The four suspects were later apprehended and sentenced to life in prison following a trial.
He was survived by his wife, daughter and son (famed radio commentator, author and columnist Paul Harvey). |
