Sergeant Truttman was shot and killed while conducting a vehicle search.
Sergeant Truttman was killed when he and another officer were shot during an investigation following a traffic stop. The other officer survived and the assailant survived after turning his gun on himself. The officers were questioning the subject who had been stopped by a sheriff's deputy earlier in the morning. The vehicle was taken to a garage to be searched further after the subject gave them consent. While they were searching the vehicle the assailant opened fire. Several firearms were located inside the vehicle. The suspect had escaped from the Erie County Courthouse in Pennsylvania in May of 1971 and was still being sought when this incident occurred.
Sergeant Truttman was survived by his wife and four children.
