Agent Torres died after falling through an opening in a railroad bridge near El Paso, Texas. He and two other agents went to the bridge to open a gate to allow a train to pass through. As he returned to the land he tripped and fell to the river bottom, 25-feet below.
Agent Torres had been with the agency for five years. He was survived by his wife and three children. He was buried in the Buena Vista Cemetery, Brownsville, Cameron County, Texas.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 37th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

I pray for solace on this day for all those who love and miss you.
