Patrolman Carl Thrush was killed in an automobile accident on State Route 93 in Vinton County when his patrol car struck an ice patch, hit another car head-on, and went over an embankment. He was on his way to a traffic accident on Route 160 when the accident occurred. He was stationed at the Athens Post at the time of the incident.

Patrolman Thrush was survived by his wife and two sons.
