Detective Thompson was shot and killed while conducting a raid on a well-known liquor house located in an alley between Plum Street and Pine Street at approximately 10:00 pm.

The officers were unable to locate any liquor during the raid. However, as Detective Thompson interviewed the owner of the house, shots were fired through a door leading to a back room. The shots struck Detective Thompson in the back. Despite being mortally wounded, Detective Thompson returned fire through the door, but did not strike the suspect. When officers entered the room they found it vacant.

Detective Thompson was taken to a local hospital where he died in the operating room at 1:15 am the following morning.

Detective Thompson was survived by his wife, adopted son, mother, brother, and two sisters.
