Officer Thompson was shot and killed while attempting to make an arrest during a traffic stop at First and I Streets, NE, in Washington, DC. Officer Thompson had chased the suspect to the location and fired a warning shot into the ground as the man resisted arrest. The suspect then grabbed Officer Thompson's revolver and shot him five time.

The suspect was arrested and charged with first degree murder. He was found to be insane and committed to St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

Officer Thompson was a WWI veteran. He had served with the U.S. Park Police for 7 years. He was survived by his wife and four children.
