Detective Lieutenant Harry A. Thom was my mother's father. He died from complications of injuries suffered during a foot pursuit a few months before I was born in 1958. My middle name is the same as his.

Family stories tell of his service during Prohibition against the Purple Gang and others running whiskey over from Canada. After Prohibition he worked in Narcotics. During WWII he wanted to join the military, but his DPD superiors convinced him to stay on.

When I was very young we would go to Police Field Day at the State Fairgrounds with my grandmother and my brothers and I would sometimes meet his colleagues.

Rest in peace.
