Officer Stuyvesant died after being overcome by gas in a cesspool while attempting to rescue a man from it. The original man and another citizen who tried to rescue Officer Stuyvesant all died as a result of the gas.

Police Officer Elbert Stuyvesant was the first negro police officer in the Port Washington Police District. Not until several decades later did the agency have another like officer: Ronald Pinckney.
