Trooper Donald Strand succumbed to injuries sustained in an automobile accident 16 days earlier while reporting to the Bridgehampton Station during Hurricane Donna.

He was off duty when he received word that, due to the pending storm, all leave had been cancelled and he was ordered to report to duty. He was driving to the police barracks when his vehicle was struck head-on by another car on North Sea Road, in Southampton, New York. The other driver died at the scene.

To fully appreciate the heroes of the present, we must recognize our heroes of the past. Your heroism and service is honored today, the 53rd anniversary year of your death.

Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.

Rest In Peace.
