Private Stewart was shot and killed during a sting operation against the "Black Hand Society". After a blackmail threat, $10,000 was placed in a decoy box. Private Stewart approached a passerby for questioning. The stranger pulled a gun and fired three shots at him. Private Stewart was able to return fire, killing the suspect.
Private Stewart had been with the agency for 13 months and was survived by his parents and two brothers.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 82nd anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
