Officer Stange was shot and killed by a prohibition officer while riding in a police car with a suspected stolen bumper used for smuggling. The police vehicle was being driven by another officer and Officer Stange had no knowledge of the stolen bumper. The prohibition officer attempted to stop the vehicle but the other officer did not stop. The prohibition officer then fired a single shot, striking Officer Stange in the head.

Officer Stange had been with the agency for over 30 years and was survived by his wife and child.
