Officer Charles Annerino was shot and killed by an escapee from the Cook County Jail. Officer Annerino and two other officers were searching Chicago taverns for the suspect. When Officer Annerino walked into a lounge at 1756 Lawrence Avenue the suspect recognized the officer and shot him through the chest. The other two officers emptied their guns at him as he escaped. Eight days later at the corner of Clark Street and Berwyn Avenue the suspect shot at police when they ordered him to halt. Policemen returned fire hitting the suspect more than a dozen times killing him.
On June 28, 1954, the suspect used a gun to escape from officers who were escorting him from the Cook County Court House back to jail. His girlfriend had smuggled the gun to him in court. He was in jail for burglary.
During Officer Annerino's eight years with the Chicago Police he had shot and killed three robbers and wounded four others in gunfights.
