Patrolman Smith died of injuries he received when he was struck by a vehicle being operated by an intoxicated driver while directing traffic at the corner of 1st Avenue and 26th Street.

Patrolman Smith was taken to Bellevie Hospital where he died two days later from his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Patrolman Smith was assigned to Traffic Precinct C.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 75th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
