Officer Smith was struck and killed by a trolley car while crossing the street at the intersection of Ryerson Street and Flushing Avenue in Brooklyn. He was transported to Cumberland Street Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Patrolman Smith had been with the agency for 22 years and was assigned to the 96th Precinct. He was survived by his wife and two children.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 81rst anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
