Sergeant Smith succumbed to injuries sustained when his vehicle was forced off of the roadway by a vehicle he was pursuing for a traffic violation the previous year. As he attempted to pass the vehicle he was forced off the road.
Sergeant Smith was assigned to Troop D and had been with the agency for 14 years.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 55th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer murdered in the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.
