Marshal Smith was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man who had just committed an armed robbery. He had responded to a call of an armed robbery and observed the suspect board a passing a streetcar. Marshal Smith also boarded the street car and exited when the suspect got off of it. When the two got off of the street car Marshal Smith attempted to arrest the man but a gunfight ensued. Marshal Smith was killed in the shootout. The suspect was later shot and killed by other detectives.

Your heroism and service is honored today, the 07th anniversary of your death. Your memory lives and you continue to inspire. Thank you for your service. My cherished son Larry Lasater was a fellow police officer who was murdered in the the line of duty on April 24, 2005 while serving as a Pittsburg, CA police officer.

Time never diminishes respect. Your memory will always be honored and revered.
